Studies indicate that the average American family earns about $55,000 per year, but more than half the world's population survive on less than $2 per day, and over 1 billion people live on half that amount.  Poverty and hunger are not results of inferior intelligence or laziness.  They largely stem from a lack of basic resources such as clean water and medicine.. things we Americans can help with.

The American government gives much less money toward fighting world hunger than many people would think.. only about 16 cents per $100 of national income.  When private donations are added in, the total is about 22 cents per $100 of national income, or less than a quarter of one percent.  That is the lowest rate of any industrialized nation.

In order to make a small difference, the owners of Mac's Retreat pledge to donate 50% of all profits to charities that provide resources and training to the poorest areas of the world.
